Company F 22nd Texas Calvary

I am researching information about my gggrandfather, William A. Vowell. I found him on the 1900 Census in Montague County. I also discovered that he received a Confederate Pension and that he applied for it on July 31,1899. I then found a record of his service on footnote.com. It says he enlisted Dec. 21,1861 in Paris, Texas. It said that he mustered Jan 13,1862 at Fort Washita C.N. According to his pension application, he served from November 1861 until the close of the war in 1865. I do not know very much about military service during this time. Would a discrepancy like this be common? I do not know anything else about him except that his son was living with him in 1900. I am trying to learn more about him. I am not 100% percent sure that the records describe the same person. As far as I could tell, there was only one William A. Vowell in Montague County at the time and that the pension was requested just a few months before the Census was taken. Could anyone suggest my next step in the research process? I was hoping finding out more about the regiment would give me another location to look for him. The pension application mentioned that he had only lived in Montague county 8 years. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
