Texas State Troops

The Great-great grandson of a Confederate veteran asked me to clarify the unit of his ancestor. the veteran lived in Anderson County (at Pert/Plentitude, if that makes any difference), and was in Captain Nathaniel B. Yelverton's Company, "Company E, Volunteers, 11th Brigade, Colonel L. W. Cooper, TST."

It sounds to me as if this is a milita unit. The individual would ahve been about 40 years old in 1860, which should ahve exempted him from service in a regular volunteer regiment, but not from militia service. I assume that "TST" stands for Texas State Troops.

Can someone advise the correct identity and nomenclature of this unit, and a synopsis of its service? Was this a militia, reserve, or other such unit?
