Re: Letter from the Texas Brigade

At the time when the unknown writer of the letter wrote -- jnust prior to the engagement at Seven Pines -- the only units of Hood's Brigade were the three Texas regiments and the 18 Georgia. Of those units only the three Texas regiments were actually engaged, with the 18 Georgia being in reserve. I don't think that Reilly's Rowan Artillery was in support of the Texas Brigade for this engagement, though certainly by the time of Gaines Mill and through much of the remaineder of the War the North Carolinains provided excellent artillery support for the brigade (except during the East Tennessee Campaign, when that battery remained in Virginia).

Hampton's Brigade was broken up after Seven Piens, and the Legion Infantry Battatlion -- at that time consisting of only seven companies -- united with the Texas Brigade at Ashland on June 25. The eighth company of the Legion's infantry did not arrive until July. Of course, at the reorganization of the Army that fall, the Legion and the 18 GA were detached, and the 2 ARK transferred to the Texas Brigade in their place.
