Coins were hoarded and disapeared at the beginning of the war.Only Confederate notes,Texas State Treasury Warrants and privately issued small denomination notes generaly circulated. The prohibition against private banks and other private issues of currency was relaxed in Texas during the war,and numerous cities,counties,and private individuals issued paper money although never in large quantities.The note issued most likely by Wade Witt for trade at his grist mill is extremly rare.Probably far less then 5 have survived.Dated April 1,1862,it says;

We Promise To Pay Bearer on Demand ONE DOLLAR For Confederate Notes or Current Bank Notes When Presented in sums of $20 and Upwards,at the Office of W.H.Witt & Co.at TRINITY MILLS Dallas Co,Texas
No.#112 Signed by A.Ward & Co.
