First I would like to say that this web site is a real find. I am very impressed with what you people are doing here.
Now to my inquiries. I am looking for info on my GGG Grandfather James Joseph West who was in the 36th Tex. Cav. Wood's Regiment. Company K.
My 1st question is I would like to know if his company went east or west. I know some companies were sent to the Mexican border and some went east and became part of the Trans Mississippi.
In Co. K also were several of his relatives. There were several that I am aware of. Anyone in Co. K. with the last names of Winn, Tumlinson, and Shields would most likely be related.
James West signed up in San Antonio, Texas. I have a copy of his mustering in paper. He was mustered in by a Lt. Macklin. It is dated March 11, 186?. For some reason, most of the blanks for the last digit in the year were not filled in. I assume it was 1862. He was listed as being 22 years old.
The 1860 census shows him living in Atascosa Co. Tx. and lists his age as 24. (Typical confusion with ages and dates) His date of birth is always listed as somewhere between 1836 and 1839. He died in Pharr Tx. 6/12/1926.
He also served as a Texas Ranger. He was a Mounted Volunteer under the command of his brother in law Peter Tumlinson. Prior to enlistment in the 36th Tex. Cav. he was with the Texas Rangers battling Juan Cortina on the Mexican border.
My 2nd question is there is a list of the men in the 36th who deserted while it was stationed in or at Galveston near the end of the war?
Family tradition has always claimed that James West was in Hoods Brigade. It is even stated in his obit. I am no authority on the subject but I do not see how that could be possible.
For my own records I want the real facts whether they be good or bad.
