I did not have that Texas Ranger info. That is very helpful.
I knew they were chasing Juan Cortina on the border (1859-1860) and that U.S. troops were also involved. No doubt that this could very easily have been what caused the confusion about Hoods Brigade. You just might have solved a big family mystery for me. I will have to look into getting his service records. This is getting very interesting.
I have other issues with his obit. I find obits, in general,to be well intentioned but not always accurate.
James Wests obit also states that his "most thrilling adventure was against the famous Indian chief, Geronimo...."
I'll probably never get to the source of that one. Maybe that was why the U.S. Army ran all over southern N. Mex. and Arizona trying in vain to find and capture Geronimo...he was in Texas having adventures with my GG Grandfather. ( Sorry, I have a warped sense of humor.)
