(1861)
"In early March, as the pace of rebellion quickened, Texas Knights of
the Golden Circle became actively engaged in the transferring of
Federal property. The castles were ordered to hold the forts until
state troops could garrison them. Among others, Captain Teel's
company divided into squads and headed for various posts along the
stage road. Teel, with fifteen privates, took charge of Fort
Duncan. Sergeant Merrick and twelve others occupied Fort Davis. By
mid-March Williams was again in the saddle in the service of the
state. Capt. James Paul's Castroville KGC company had instructions
to receive the surrender of Camp Verde on the Medina River. 'It
seemed rather a large order,' the Englishman Williams wrote, 'but
the 'boys' were in high spirits and eager for a fight. Before
daybreak our small bugler had roused the camp, and by sun-up we had
drunk our coffee and were off on our long ride.' The surrender went
smoothly, and Williams, now orderly sergeant, gave receipts for all
transferred property, including eighty camels. 'They were of little
trouble to us as far as the females were concerned...but some of the
males were the mischief, especially an old gentleman they
christened 'the major'."
