TST (Texas State Troops) is a technical term that can be confusing. The State Troops of Texas, or any other state, were those states that made up part of the state militia, or state troops. They were turned over to the national government, the Confederacy, but stayed under state control. But a lot of state troops were turned over to the Confederate government. So even though they were called the 28th Texas Cavalry, or the 1st Texas Sharpshooters Bn., or the 15th Texas Infantry, or whatever - they were NOT State Troops. As to how to tell the difference - someone else will have to help you with that. But Burnet's Sharpshooters were not State Troops, they were Confederate soldiers.
You really need to get a copy of this man's service record. Click on the banner ad at the top of this page. They'll give you better service than you'll get from the National Archives.
