Thanks so much for the load of info. That provides some big pieces in this puzzle. I think the reason for the desertion sounds so much like a classic 'Don't mess with Texas' attitude. When I 1st learned he deserted, I was stunned. Now I am proud of him. That's a typical Texan... stick to your guns and hang onto your horse.
As for the stray West men, I have run across names in that family before. I think they might be kin, but not directly. Thanks again for all the help.
