The Texas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: James Parker and Spencer Willis-Texas sharpsho

Sally --

I can help with military records, but don't know anything about the family.

The military records show only one James Parker in this set. They don't state that he left the prisoner-of-war at Camp Morton IN to go to Missouri. They do state that he requested to take the oath of allegiance to the U.S. at Camp Morton, giving the name J. A. Parker of Smithville MO as his bondsman. The answer must have been 'no', because the last card shows that James Parker entered U.S. military service at Camp Morton IN during March 1865. The rest of his Civil War military records are elsewhere.

Note also that 'Tenn' on one card has been crossed out and 'Tex' written over it. In cursive writing 'Tex' could look like 'Ten'. Someone in the War Department caught the error and tried to fix it.

There are two different dates of capture in these records (July 17 and July 21, 1863), but both are for the same man captured at Jackson MS. It doesn't mean Parker was captured twice, only that the clerks recorded different date for his capture.

I hope this helps you better understand the military records. Let me know if you have other questions.
