Beat No. 2 vs. Precinct No. 2; AL, MS &TX census

Sally Staley,
.
Below is what I have on your "Spencer A. Willis" and "
A.J. Brumalow." You sent me the death info on your S.A. Willis with the question: "Did he die in Hunt or Johnson County, TX?"
.
I sent you the page from my volume II showing your Willis and Brumalow family members in the Hunt County TX militia that enrolled in “Beat 2”.

I may have sent a confusing message about Beat No. 2 versus Precinct No. 2
.
The terms “precinct” and “beat” are used interchangeably in some of the Texas censuses and some of the North Texas militia listings.
.
My unabridged WEBSTER’s THIRD INTERNATIONAL DICTIONARY (1971) definition “9a” for “beat” is “an administrative subdivision of a county in Alabama or Mississippi — called also supervisor district -- an election precinct in Alabama or Mississippi." ... Years ago, I too was curious about the term “beat” and was surprised to find this definition.
.
I transcribed exactly what the militia record showed.
