Ben Franklin Terry organized the 8th Texas Cavalry "Terry's Texas Rangers", along with Thomas Lubbock and Terry's law partner John Austin Wharton. Ben Terry was killed in the regiments first battle near Woodsonville Kentucky. Lubbock took command of the regiment but died of disease before his command was official leaving the regiment to John Wharton. Wharton was in command of Terry's Texas Rangers thoughout thier glory days until he was promoted to Major General. David Terry was in California during those days but joined the 8th Texas briefly and was wounded at Chickamauga. Shortly after, he and Samuel Houston Brooks (of Montgomery County) who was aide-de-camp to General Cheatham were given the authourity to go back to Texas and raise a new regiment of Texas Cavalry. If you look at the companies of the 8th Texas you will find that David Terry assigned them similar to what his brother had done originally. That might answer your questions about the counties and their companies. David Terry became commander of Terry's Texas Cavalry and Sam Houston Brooks was second in command. The regiment did not see much action but spent a short time in Louisiana. It was disbanded before the end of the war in Austin County.
