D.S. Terry's TX Cavalry, formed mid-1864
In Response To: Re: Terry's Cavalry ()

George Martin and Wes Barton,

I reread this thread with interest, primarily because it addresses the last year of the Civil War of Texas, which is what I address ... a lonesome study of fragmented records.
.
Question: ..Before I do any more work on this D.S. Terry's Texas Cavalry, I want to make sure that everything in this post pertains to D.S. Terry. ...I want to hear Wes Barton's response to this posting.
.
Since Company F, of [A.W.] Terrell’s 37th Texas Cavalry is disputed by Wes Barton, I'm a bit leary. ..I question this because of the anecdote below.

The regimental return cards can get info transposed and just plain mixed up. ..There were at least 15 different men named "Spencer Adkins" most of whom lived within a 30-mile radius in the Pike-Floyd Co KY area. ..(Upon request, I will send my listing of Spencer Adkinses.). ...The data for two different Spencer Adkins' cards got mixed up.

Only after I had the two sets in front of me that I could figure out what the problem was. Years later, an Adkins cousin contacted me and was proud to report that he too had found that these two records had been transposed.
.
My "Spencer Adkins" of the 10th KY Regt Cavalry, Co C, CSA, commissioned a Sgt in the field and served 3-1/2 yrs.

Quoting:
Terry's Regiment Texas Cavalry was organized and mustered into the service of the Confederate States about July 6, 1864, with ten companies, A to K, which were composed principally of former members of the Texas State Troops. It was dismounted in the early part of 1865. Company A was formerly Company F, 37th Regiment Texas Cavalry, which became an independent company about March 1864 and was assigned to this regiment July 6, 1864. Captain R. H. D. Sorrell's Company was first assigned to Griffin's Battalion Texas Infantry as Company G, then to this regiment and subsequently to Baylor's Regiment Texas Cavalry as Company I.
