Pvt. Charles Matlage enlisted June 2, 1862 at Houston in Capt. Horace Haldeman's Company Light Artillery (This command was accepted into the service of the Confederate States, July 1, 1861, It was known at various times as Captain Mechling's and as Captain Haldeman's Company Texas Light Artillery, but was officially designated the 4th Texas Field Battery and assigned it the 4th Battalion Field Artillery by S.O. No. 290, Hdqrs. Trans. Miss. Department, dated November 19, 1864), deserted at Pine Bluff, Arkansas January 21[?], 1863.
