Death of Gen. McPherson

Several years ago, I read a book or article with a quote attributed to the Sgt. Major of the 17th/18th Texas Cavalry (Dismounted) regarding the death of Union General James B. McPherson at Atlanta. The approximate words were,"Two of our boys, both good shots, fired at him, and he fell from his horse". The piece went on to identify a private from Co. C, 17th Texas, as the man who got credit for killing General McPherson. I have since lost my notes on this information, and don't remember if it's from a book, magazine, or other source. Is there anyone out there who is familiar with this source and can point me to it, or can otherwise confirm this information and identify the Sgt. Major and Private of the 17th Texas involved?

I will deeply appreciate any help offered.
