Which database has the correct information for the Confederate service of “Sgt. Thomas C. Teftiller” of Fannin County TX. Below are two of our major sources of Civil War regimental information and their differences in their data for this Texas soldier.
.

Since it is easy to confuse the Lamar County military units with the moniker “9th”, I included the following header on page vIIpA-3 of my 472-page appendix that contains 243 militia listings.
.
***********
.
9th Texas Cavalry, 9th Texas Infantry, 9th Texas Cavalry Partisans, 9th Texas Light Battery
Confederate Only, Not Texas State Troops
.
This listing is included because of confusion with the 9th Militia Brigade TST: the 9th Texas Cavalry CSA, the 9th Texas Infantry CSA, the 9th Texas Cavalry Partisan Battalion CSA (commanded by J.L. Randolph), the 9th Texas Field Battery Light Artillery “Lamar Artillery” CSA (commanded by James M. Daniel), plus the South Texas CSA military unit, 9th Regt. Texas Infantry, organized by E.B. Nichols (also called the 5th Texas Volunteer Infantry). (see vIIppA-5, A-113, A-342.)
.
The 9th Texas Infantry was mustered into the Confederacy by Col. S.B. Maxey on Dec. 1, 1861 with Lt-Col. W.E. Beeson, Maj. Wright A. Stanley and Captains: E.J. Shelton, Co. A, Lamar County; Smith Ragsdale, Co. B, Red River County; Wm. Hugh Young, Co. C, Grayson County; James H. McReynolds, Co. D, Titus County; James Hill, Co. E, Lamar County; J.A. Leftwich, Co. F, Hopkins County; Joseph A. Moore, Co. G, Hopkins County; Harvey Wise, Co. H, Fannin County; J.J. Dickson, Co. I, Collin County; and M.A. Dillard, Co. K, Lamar County.

I stumbled onto this obvious mistake when I was checking the NPS database for info found in the American Civil War Research Database, which I prefer, especially when the spelling of a name is questioned.

P.S. Note from Russell Tefertiller, >>bigruss610@aol.com<<. I have found Thomas as the son of Michael Teftiller (or however they spelled it. ..I've seen a few different ways from this family.) ..In 1850 census, look in the 10th Civil District of Blount County, TN, p. 164, lines 25-30. Thomas' father was also a blacksmith. Their last name on this census was spelled Teeftiller.
.
1870 Fannin County, Texas cen -- Bonham, TX -- Precinct 1, pg 17, line 1--Thomas Teftiller, wife Margret (who was born in KY)
