To truly understand these units, it will be necessary to spend more hours reviewing Texas state laws, state adjutant general's records and correspondence of wartime governors. Each Southern governor wanted to retain a viable militia for purposes of state defense, and each Southern governor found himself in conflict with the Confederate military over the extent of his ability to do that. There's not much here in the way of battles, blood and glory, but much useful and relatively unknown information is available!
