I am a fifth grade summer school teacher at Sherman Elementary. My students are attending summer school because they didn't pass their reading and math TAKS and/or Stanford test. Because they associate reading with the TAKS test which they failed, they hate it. I'm trying to reframe their perspective of reading by kindling their natural curiosity about the past. We are studying the Civil War right now. We are reading Shades of Gray by Carolyn Reeder. I have planned some group activities that involve primary documents like soldier's letters, photographs, and newspaper articles. Nonetheless, I think the students would enjoy and learn so much from a Civil War reenactor. Does anyone know who I contact to find a Civil War reenactor in the Houston area?
