Texas death certificate information is now online.

The Church of Latter Day Saints Family Search is compiling a database for death certificate information. They have completed this database for Utah, Michigan, and Texas (1890-1976). ..Since I ordered a Michigan death certificate 20 years ago, I am not surprised they put Michigan toward the top of their list since Michigan was not embarrassed to charge an outrageous sum for a death certificate.

What I know about Texas death certificates will not fill a thimble, but I will share what I know.

1) The earliest Texas death certificate that I’ve seen was issued in 1897 Orangeville, Fannin County TX, but then, I only study North Texas.

2) In some very rural Texas counties, some death certificates were not habitually filed as late as 1926. ..(Unfortunately, rich people’s death certificates took precedence over the ordinary Joe Schmo.)

Kudos to a librarian at the Dallas TX Genealogy Library. ..She explained that the death certificate information database is compiled by having two different abstractors independently collect info then a referee compares their two abstractions. ..When there is a disagreement, the wrinkles are rubbed out. e.g., She said that the referee had corrected one “Byrd” death certificate information so that it could easily be found, which she had unsuccessfully sought for years. ... and she is no novice.

She also said that readers should send suggestions to improve their format. .. I quickly learned that they do not have a “download” feature but have a “copy to clipboard” feature, a concept beyond me. ..A simple “download” feature makes more sense to me.
