Your ancestor is listed as Wade H. Walters. He served in Company I of the 17th Texas Cavalry; however, the database also lists a Wade Walters as having served in Company D of the same unit. He may have enlisted in one of the companies and then transferred into the other company.

This database was compiled by the National Park Service and has basic information about soldiers and various regiments.

The 17th Texas Cavalry was recruited in east Texas and first served in Arkansas. They were stationed at Camp Hope near Austin, Arkansas, but they left there in November 1862 for Arkansas Post. They surrendered at Arkansas Post after their unsuccessful defense of the place in January 1863. To make a long story short, they were exchanged, dismounted, and transferred to the western theater where they became part of Hiram Granbury’s brigade. The brigade served thereafter in many of the major western campaigns. This information is from Ralph A. Wooster’s book, LONE STAR REGIMENTS IN GRAY that was published in 2002 by Eakin Press. Your local public library may have the book; if they don’t then they should be able to borrow it from another library by using interlibrary loan.
