The two men served in this unit, also known as the 7th Texas Mounted Volunteers. The census for 1860 reports Sidney S. Winters as a farm worker in the household of John F. Winters. The other man's name is Z. J. Caldwell rather then A. J. Caldwell, the 'J" standing for John. According to service records, both men served together through 1862, the last record on file for either one.

Since deaths by disease during the Civil War outnumbered deaths on the battlefield better than 5 to 1, it's more accurate to use 'died' rather than 'killed' unless you know the cause of death.
