As I once asked a company officer as he wrote an email about having me fired, feel free to use my name but please spell it correctly.

I'm sure you're aware that the first company had enrolled for twelve months. Soon after officers and men were released from imprisonment, the company reorganized under the law of April 16, 1862. Those who survived prison or had not been discharged earlier joined with new recruits to form the new company. Some of those released at Vicksburg probably decided to go home and enlisted in other units there. As was the case with other companies that had been captured at Fort Donelson, new elections had to be held under the law of April 16, 1862. For these and other reasons, rolls of the old and the new company would differ in many respects.

Also, keep in mind that Forrest replaced Gould's Company "D" after its capture at Fort Donelson. For that reason the NARA register for his regiment will include officers and men who are listed as Company "D" but without any connection to Texas. The second Company "D" was organized by Forrest's brother and recruited in Tennessee.
