Re: Bourland's Border Guard; A. P. Fletcher

Patricia,

The info on your website is very interesting. This what is what I know about Amasa P. Fletcher; He was born in 1820 and I believe his parents were Charles and Eunice Fletcher. They came to Crawford County, Arkansas in the 1840's. Amasa married Paulina, and I think her maiden name was Millspaugh. In 1850 they were listed in Crawford County and their neighbors were the Stewarts. Before 1860 Paulina had died and Amasa married his neighbor Louisiana Stewart and her Stewart kids are listed with them in 1860. He is mentioned in the newspapers a few times in Van Buren. In 1860 he had a horse stolen and with talk of the war he was on a committee to police the area.

In the 1870 census his first 3 children were listed as born in Arkansas. Last one would have been in 1863. Next child was born in Texas in 1864, so I imagine he came in 1863-64 time frame. From the muster rolls I have from the national archives, it says he was a teamster in assistant quarter master, employed at Gainsville July 31, 1864. The rolls I have go through January of 1865.

The records I have I ordered from the history sites and is A.P. Fletcher's service record. I am not sure if thats my Amasa P. Fletcher or not. I would be very interested in anything that could positvely prove this. His son, James Henry Fletcher 1847-1914 stated in the 1900 census that he was a veteran of the confederate army also. I've never seen any records for him. I do have a photo of James Fletcher but nothing from his dad Amasa P. Fletcher.

I am very interested in finding out what the teamster did for the quartermaster. And the way it says he was employed, I take he wasn't volunteering????
