Re: Hollywood Cemetery
In Response To: Hollywood Cemetery ()

The 1869 listing is the most complete that currently exists. This list was compiled using the original hand written burial roster books. There are known mis-spellings and mistakes present as was in error when the entries were made. Much of which is difficult or even impossible to completely verify due to some units muster records failed to survive to cross check with.

Of the approx 18,000 confederate dead in the soldiers section of Hollywood Cemetery... only approx 6,000 are identified. Many of the entries there are battlefield re-interments that no identity was known, and no means to do so. Majority of those identified were those that died in the respective hospitals of Richmond that were known and recorded as such, and/or were brought in from the battlefields to be buried, that were known. Those records were fairly well kept and continued even after the Union occupation of Richmond after the end of the war.

There is a new publication in the works to give more data to those known buried there and extending to those soldiers also buried in private family lots within the vast cemetery as well as those from the old soldiers home that were entered there... that is still underway...

Also be known that Hollywood wasnt the only interment location for confederate soldiers in Richmond. It frequently was used by those hospital facilties that were on the western part of the City. Oakwood Cemetery was also used and has approx 16,000 buried there, which was used by many of those on the Eastern sections of the city.
