Robert E Lee License plate

Robert E. Lee Dishonored!

Gentlemen,

I hate to say it, but that is the headline on July 31st when the SCV fails to submit 350 paid applications to put the much publicized commemorative Robert E. Lee license plate on the road. The plate was one of the few things that we could have done to bring state-wide recognition to Lee's 200th birthday.

ACT NOW! There are enough members on this email list to fill in the gap. I personally ask that each of you for the Honor of Robert E. Lee's good name that you submit an application for at least one plate to the Division Adjutant and mail it by Thursday. If you don't want to keep the plate long-term, drop it next year and put your SCV or other plate back on then, but let's not have Lee's memory made a laughing stock. Right now, it will look to the legislature like only 100 people in the whole state give a hoot about Lee, that does not speak highly of Lee or us. If we get these on the road, they will be a success and we can be proud of it.

Don't dishonor the character of General Lee!

Sincerely,
Brandon Dorsey
past commander

(for further details, please see below or the attached “Cover Letter” file. You may use the attached DMV Form VSA 10 or got to their website to download a copy at http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/pdf/vsa10.pdf):

Dear Friend of Robert E. Lee:
In commemoration of the bicentennial of Robert E. Lee’s birthday, January 19th, 1807, the General Assembly has made available the opportunity for you to be one of the first recipients of a license plate honoring the General (see license plate image accompanying this request).

We need 350 pre-purchasers of the plates for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to go forward with production. If we receive 350 responses from pre-purchasers, you will automatically receive your new plates in the mail. If we do not receive the required number to complete the project, your payment will be refunded directly to you. Once purchased, your Robert E. Lee license plates will be yours indefinitely.

To pre-purchase, complete the accompanying Form VSA 10 (specialized license plate request form) and return the completed, signed form, with your payment to:

Robert E. Lee License Plate Initiative

P.O. Box 3732

Glen Allen, VA 23058-3732

Your payment should be made payable to “Robert E. Lee License Plate Initiative”. Your entire payment will be forwarded to the DMV, along with your completed specialized license plate request form, when 350 pre-purchase requests have been received.

In completing the form, make sure you:

1) Check the license plate category “Special Interest”, and write “New Robert E. Lee Plate” in the space provided.

2) If you would like special lettering on your plate, check the “Personalized Plates” square and write in your four potential lettering choices in the spaces provided. As the “Robert E. Lee” plate includes the General’s picture (considered a logo), you will only be able to select 6 letters.

3) Ensure all listed owners of the automobile for which you are purchasing the plate are included on the form and have signed the form. Any requests being processed without all the applicable owners’ signatures will be rejected by DMV.

4) Ensure you have checked your insurance coverage option correctly. Again, any requests being processed without an insurance declaration will be rejected by DMV.

5) Do not complete credit card payment information. DMV’s process requires we submit all our pre-purchase requests with one check. The DMV does not have the time to go through our stack of applications and individually run/authorize credit card payment information.

6) Ensure you enclose your check or money order made payable to “Robert E. Lee License Plate Initiative”:

a. Your check or money order should be for $10 if you want a set of plates with lettering/numbering assigned by DMV.

OR

b. Your check or money order should be for $20 if you want a set of plates with specialized lettering for which you’ve completed the “Personalized Plates” section of the form.

Please be aware the General Assembly recently changed the law related to development of specialized license plates, therefore we have only until July 31st, 2006, to accumulate 350 pre-purchasers of the Robert E. Lee Plate. If we’re unable to achieve 350 in that time, we’ll seek authorization for issuance of the plate again in 2007. If we have to take that extra step, we may need to hold your pre-purchase payment up to two years before the plates are finally produced.

During the period leading up to issuance of the Lee License Plate, if your current license plates or registration come up for renewal, you should pay any required renewal fee and go forward with the normal renewal process, as you would if you were not purchasing specialized plates.

If you have any questions related to the Robert E. Lee license plate initiative, please put them in writing and forward them to the P.O. Box address listed above or e-mail them to christopherjevans@comcast.net.

Thank you for your participation in this important commemorative event honoring Robert E. Lee!
