Re: Hospitals in Danville Va

Jim,

One of my g-g-great uncles was captured at Chickamauga & died in the smallpox epidemic at Danville the following January.

I read several accounts written after the war, & there was a general agreement that sick prisoners were removed from Richmond in late November & during December of 1863, and sent to Danville. I'm not certain, however, if there was a separate facility for the smallpox patients.

Check with the NARA. It appears to me that there are spotty records for the hospital that the POWs were sent to. I have no idea if a roster exists of the patients. I suspect that if records exist for the period that you are looking for, you would have to read the record to see if the names that you are researching are there.

Richmond did notify Washington when a prisoner died, at the time that my POW died, in January 1864. Check the service records of the people to find out if notification of death was sent.
