Smith, Confederate and later Rough Rider?

I have a photograph of a Civil War soldier identified only as Smith of the 11th Virginia, who later served in the Spanish-American War and was killed at San Juan Hill as a member of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders.

I found a Horatio H. Smith (alias Race H. Smith) who died on July 2, 1898, of wounds received at San Juan Hill. He was a member of Company A, First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry. I have been unable to locate any soldier by that name who served in the 11th Virginia.

Can anyone provide information that might help establish his identity? Thanks, Ron.
