Bill,

I got your picture, and it was worth a thousand words. This medal is for a 1912 Reunion of Civil War veterans in Marion, Virginia. It is pretty crude and is not a United Confederate Veterans badge -- the event must have been locally sponsored.

Although the medal is in fairly bad condition, the soldier's name is bold and clear: "SAH Groseclose, 28th VA. BAT Co. F." . Around the inscription is the general information: "1912 MARION VA. 61-65 ". The medal has a slit which is typical of a watch fob of the 1920s, but this slit could also allow a ribbon for suspension so it could be attached to the jacket with a pin. At Confederate reunions the veterans usually preferred attached medals, possibly because the Confederacy was never able to give them the service medals they deserved.

I've never seen this medal before, so I don't have a good idea of what it's worth. Probably more than $20 but less than $75. However, this should be a treasured family heirloom for Mr Groseclose's descendants, and I see why you are trying to locate them. Good Luck.
