In Response To: Fort Mahone-April 1865 -query ()

The person to answer this question (if anyone can) is Chris Calkins at Petersburg NPS. The location is not exact enough and the movement of troops in the Petersburg lines make determining state affilation difficult. The uniform is of no help since it is a imported P.Tait jacket. In some of the views of soldiers at Petersburg the button faces can be made out under magnification. There are no state buttons visible on this soldier in fact the buttons have been cut off probably by Yankee soldiers as mementos. There are at least 2 and maybe 3 views of the same soldier. There is a dead colored civilian (soldier) seen behind him in one of the views. This picture can be downloaded from the Lib of Congress web site in the archival Tiff version and zoomed in by a decent photo program. The qualitiy is so good that a bullet can be seen laying on the ground.
