Carpenter's Battery, formerly Company A of the 27th Regiment Virginia Volunteers, had the following individuals on the muster roll on 21 July 1861, at the first battle of Manassas: John M. Knight and George R. McKnight. The original company were nearly all from Covington, Virginia. This company was enrolled on 22 April 1861 and entered service the same day at Staunton, Virginia (source: Confederate Veteran magazine, Vol. 13 (1905), p. 365)
