Staunton River Battlefield

This is really odd. My husband used to live in the region years ago, and told me of some of the things which happened there like the time when Saxe had 40' of floodwater. He and I would go to Saxe and Randolph all the time to see friends of his. Think of it. Going by Little Roanaoke Creek by Randolph, not knowing about a battle there! Wow!
I didn't find out until a few years ago that a battle had taken place on the Roanoke River by the Little Roanoke.
I just went there for the first time on Dec 3,2006 for my birthday gift to me. I was going to see friends in Charlotte and Meckenburg Counties when I got the urge to go to the site at Roanoke Station and the battlefield itself.

What actually happened there? I don't think that the visitors center was open.
