Thank you for the information. I don't believe there were any skimishes in this area, Hartwood Church was the closest. The old road between Hartwood and the couthouse ran through that area, per an 1863 map. So, what you say makes sense, and I'll check around the ends of the pits, which by the way are up on the flat hilltop and away from the trench. Glad to hear they were not likely graves. I'm obviuosly new to this, so any help is appreciated. Greg
