There are over 5 million names of both Union and Confederate soldiers. Names like Wood and McKinney would require some additional information including first names and the geographic location of where these people lived in 1860. There are 8,896 Woods and 2,035 McKinneys on the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System website and this website is not complete, for instance leaving out the entire states of Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The Spinks name being somewhat unusual would produce a shorter list; however, even this name produces 177 hits on the Civil War Soldier and Sailors System website at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ .

You'll have to have some additional info to narrow-down the search.
