This is a stretch, but interesting aside.

One of my favorite movies "Cold Mountain" showcases Jude Law as a Confederate deserter and depicts the Confederate home guard tracking down and dealing with deserters. It was a fascinating facet of the movie, though I don't know if it was accurate.
