His Find A Grave Memorial # 14404646, born August 22, 1844, records that he served in the civil war as “Aide/staff for Gen.Alexander P. Stewart”
This must be in error, see:
On September 16,1863, General Stewart wrote the Adjutant General
I “ . . . Have employed the services of a Citizen Mr. John E. Hatcher in the Adjt. Gen’l’s department …. has been on duty since the 25th July. . . . Mr. John E. Hatcher is a native of Va. resident for past 26 years in Tenn. is 36 years of age . . . unfit . . . for field service . . . He can ride but on foot requires the assistance of a crutch . . . he is a writer by profession . . . I respectfully ask . . . [he] be appointed Captain in the Adjt. & Insp. Gen’ls Department . . . & ordered to report to me.”
