Obviously the Merrimac never terrorized the waters of the Potomac River. None of the article makes any sense unless you take a coupe of things into account. First, Brooke Station is nine miles NORTH (actually northwest) of Fredericksburg and the Rappahannock River. It is also close to Aquia Harbor on the Potomac River. Second, he may have been officially transferred to the Merrimac from the army at Brooke Point, then took shipping south on one of those rivers to board his ship in Norfolk It would have taken him about a day by ship to reach the Merrimac.

The confusion is probably a combination of a typo and a poor understanding of the facts.
