You've gotten some good answers from folks. I've been studying the 14th Virginia, particularity Company F, and may be able to fill in a little background.

You've been told that Godwin was in the 3rd Regiment, but ended up for a while in the 14th Virginia. The 3rd Virginia had been a militia regiment and had occupied the Gosport Shipyard after the Union forces set it on fire. Gov. Letcher believed that field grade officers should not come from the counties of the companies in their regiments. So the Commander of the 3rd Virginia, James Gregory Hodges of Portsmouth, was appointed Colonel of the 14th Virginia. Godwin went with him. Godwin was not re-elected, but Hodges stayed with the 14th Virginia and died a few paces from the stone wall at Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg.
