THE ENEMY ATTACK FOSTER’S LINE
About four o’clock yesterday morning the enemy attacked General Foster’s line and, after reaching his earthworks were driven back in confusion with the loss of nearly one hundred.,
General Foster in order to be prepared for any move of the enemy, had ordered General Dandy to have his brigade under arms at 4 a.m. The troops had been working at the breastworks up to an hour or two before and were lying down a short distance in rear of them. At sharp four just as the troops were formed into line the enemy made a most unexpected dash upon the works. Such was the celerity and silence with which this advance was made that the rebel flag was already floating on our parapet as our troops lined them. A short hand to hand fight took place eventuating in the complete repulse of the enemy.
THE ENEMY’S FORCES
The rebel force engaged in the attack consisted of portions of Davis’ and Cook’s brigades of Heth’s division and Teale’s brigade of Wilcox’s division, all of Hill’s corps. General Heth was on the field in person.
