Mr. Kirby enlisted at Independence, Va. July 31, 1861 in Company C, 8th Regiment Virginia Calvary, Early's Command. He served until after General Lee's surrender at Appomattox, Va. in April 1865. This group operated in Western Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and the Ohio area. He served under Captain William H Bramlett followed by Richard C. Bourne. Mr. Kirby did not own any slaves, but like a large percentage of southerners fought for his state's rights to govern. He received a pension of $30.00 per year from the State of Virginia.
