Skirmish at the Boiseau House March 31, 1865

The past couple of days I’ve been reading through the testimony of members of the fifth army corps At the warren court of inquiry. I struck paydirt today when I looked at the testimony of major cope who was one of Warren‘s aids.

To refresh your memories, Warren won an important victory at White Oak Road on March 31st against forces commanded by Robert E. Lee himself, but Sheridan's battle at Dinwiddie Court House was a Union defeat.

We all know that Warren sent a brigade southward to help Sheridan. The brigade was Bartletts from Griffin's 1st division and cope accompanied it. Cope mentions that on the evening of March 31 Bartletts brigade got very close to the confederate rear which was at Dinwiddie Court house

cope says that Confederate cavalry were in the boiseau house and that bartlett’s brigade drove them out. It also mentions that Bartlett threw out a skirmish line on one side of a creek and the rebels had a skirmish line on the other side of the creek

this union account seems To connect to a confederate account which has puzzled me for a long time. In the new annals of the war there is an article by Theodore Garnett about the adventures of Roberts North Carolina cavalry brigade. Garnett says as the brigade approached the Dinwiddie courthouse battlefield, it’s rear was attacked by union infantry. I think the union infantry were from Bartlett’s brigade.

I wish I could connect these two accounts to this post so you could read them.
