9th Virginia Cavalry vs 1st US Cavalry

Julia, Edward, Ted

The regular brigade, also known as the reserve brigade, occupied the center of Devin’s first division. The first United States cavalry under Captain Richard Lord was mounted, while the rest of the brigade was dismounted and had sent their horses to the rear. As soon as the brigade assaulted the confederate breastworks and crossed them, captain lord took his regiment westward to the Ford road. He galloped northward up the road, mistakenly believing that’s some of the Confederates were attempting to escape up the Ford road. (Report of Colonel Alfred Gibbs OR volume 46 part one page 1128)

Captain Lord encountered major general warren just as the general reached the C. Young field west of the Ford Depot Road. Warren told Lord that there were no Confederates on the Ford Depot Road. He suggested that Lord ride into the Young field and head west. This is precisely what Lord did.

Apparently Confederate pickets spotted Lord's regiment and notified Maj. Gen. W.H.F. (Rooney) Lee. He sent the 9th VIrginia Cavalry to stop Lord.

General Richard beale testified that the ninth Virginia cavalry was detached from his line of battle South of White Oak Road and sent north of the road to meet a union force Which was advancing westward. The regiment met the union force and charged it, driving it back and losing four or five men in the process. (Warren court of inquiry volume one page 619)
