Re: Hood's Battalion Local Defense

6/12/64 --1st Military District, Dept N C & Southern. Va -S O #11/VII. To the troops of my command for the defense of Petersburg, on the south side of the Appomattox, on the 9th, I have, with the approval & under the instructions of the cdg Gen, to offer my grateful acknowledgments for their gallant conduct, & my congratulations upon their successful repulse of the enemy. Approaching with 9 Regts of Infy & Cav, & at least 4 pieces of Arty, they searched our lines from Btry #1 to Btry #29, a distance of nearly 6 miles.
Hood’s [Va Reserves Bn] & Batte’s [44th Va] Bns, the 46th Regt Va Vols, & 1 Co (Capt Woods, Co F), of the 23rd SC, with Sturdivant’s [Albemarle Va] Btry & a few guns in position, & Taliaferro’s Cav, kept them at bay & punished them severely until they reached the Jerusalem Plank road, in front of Btry #29, defended by Major [Fletcher H.] Archer’s [3rd Va Reserves Bn] corps of reserves & 2nd-class militia, & by 1 piece of Sturdivant’s Btry, a howitzer, under the temporary command of Gen Colston.
