You are quite right. Since the Unionists had their way and West Virginia became a Union state, the endeavors of those men from the region, who fought for the Confederacy, have been immensely overshadowed by the history of the parent state. It should be remembered however, that when the 16th was organized, West Virginia was still Virginia and its men were Virginians.
