Re: Gary's Brigade at Appomattox

Alan,

I have wondered about the brigade's strength myself. At the end of July 1864 the brigade numbered about 800 men. The 7th SC Cav. had lost heavily at Old Church and the brigade as a whole had lost additional men at Riddle's Shop and Samaria Church.

In 1865 the 7th Ga. Cavalry was added to the brigade, as had a battery of artillery. My wild guess is that it probably numbered about 1,000 at the beginning of the spring campaign of 1865.

An article by Phil Sheridan in North American Review claimed that he'd driven Gary's brigade into "flight" on April 9th. This provoked articles by 2 or 3 members of the brigade.

I'm sure we could find out how many men Gary lost on the night of the 8th through Union pow lists. They're very complete for the Appomattox Campaign.

This makes the second rebel cavalry brigade that Custer annihilated during the Appomattox Campaign. He'd destroyed Barringer's brigade at Namozine Church on April 3rd.

I think the Confederate account is perfectly accurate.

I am looking for battle accounts for east Tenn. by members of the Alabama cavalry brigade attached to Morgan's division. Can you help me?

Bryce
