That information fits the scenario posed by the Virginia Regimental Histories Series, but it is at variance with the NPS listings and the one regimental history I've been able to find. What is maddening is the fact that there was only one James JOhnson in the 17th VA Inf (at least at muster-in). I cannot find William James ("James") Johnson in census listings after the war and the family oral history is that he died in the conflict, so I believe that this information could be correct.
