Thank you for the reply Johnny.I had found the article on the Canal from the Harpers Weekly and that Goff was on that monument in Washington as one of the white officers of the colored troops.Tho they did mispell his first name.

It is a fascinating subject.I have five Confederate Grandfathers and you can imagine my surprise when tracing this line and finding Goff.

Now this is interesting.Before Goff took that examination and became an officer in the 107th.USCI,he was a sargent in the 128th OVI and a guard at Camp Chase,Ohio in December of 63 at the same time another Grandfather,John Gresham,9th Batt.Tennessee Cavalry CSA was a prisoner there.I have often wondered if they ever spoke to each other and perhaps exchanged a few taunts.

I do know that Gresham's Battalion wiped out a colored regiment at Jackson,La.in June of 63.I would imagine they would have had some interesting stories to exchange after the war.
