Re: Mobile Advertiser's Account of Spottsylvania

Bryce. Thanks for your effort to bring these newspaper accounts to the public view. I know the work you have gone to at the Library of Congress and other places to dig this information out of either the original papers or microfilm of those issues. To expand a little on what you have provided, the correspondent "A" who wrote to the Mobile Advertiser and Register was a reporter by the name of Peter Wellington Alexander, according to J. Cutler Andrews' fine book, "The South Reports the Civil War." Alexander wrote for several papers, using different pen names, including "Sallust" when he wrote for the Richmond Daily Dispatch. "Sallust" reported on the Wilderness and Spotsylvania campaigns in the Richmond Daily Dispatch, and while I have not closely compared the stories he sent as "A" to Mobile on the same topics, I believe they are very similar. For those who want to follow "Sallust's" reporting on the Wilderness-Spotsylvania battles, see the Richmond Daily Dispatch for 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 25 and 30 May, and for 2 June.
