Jeff

I believe the man you are looking for is Martin Van Buren Ball. Captain of Co. D 22nd Va. Cav. Captain Ball had served previously in the 37th Virginia Infantry. My Great-Great-Uncle served in Co. D of the 22nd Va. Cav. He had served previously with Capt. Ball in Co. I of the Va. 37th Infantry.. This company was from Russell County, Virginia.

Here is some info on him:

Ball, Martin Van Buren: Captain, Co. D. Enlisted May 2, 1863 at New Garden, Virginia ...aged 21 per 1860 Russell County census...: Present on 10/31/63 : Cashiered on 4/27/64 as a deserter:Took the Oath of Allegience to the United States in West Virginia and sent north 4/15/65...Age 26...Fair complexion...dark hair and eyes...Previously served as 1st Sgt. of Co. I, 37th Virginia Infantry.

I recommend Jeff Weaver's 22nd Virginia Cavalry volume published by H.E. howard. It is a very good reference.
