Re: Has anyone here studied Seven Pines seriously?

Bryce On June 1st Mahone & Armistead were engaged with French and Howard in the woods south of the Rich.& York R.R and east of Fair Oaks Station. After driving Howard and part of French's Brigades across the tracks, Meagher's Brigade was pushed forward to bolster the Federal line. Pickett's Brigade was moving up to the right of Armistead and became engaged with Birney's troops. The weight of the 3 Federal brigades against Mahone & Armistead forced them to fall back. Armistead held on with part of his brigade but eventually had to retire east of the 9 Mile Rd. The Federal force then attacked Pickett but was repulsed. Orders came to Pickett to fall back, but he did not want to leave his wounded on the field and refused. After a second assault he rode back to D.H Hill and asked for help. Colston's Brigade was sent to his left and Mahone's troops plus the 53rd Va.(which was detached at Longstreet's H.Q) regrouped and moved to Pickett's right. The Union brigades eventually fell back. Pickett says the fighting ended about 11:30 A.M and he held his position until 1:00 P.M. White Oak Swamp and Kemper's Brigade was south of Casey's Redoubt and I can't see how Armistead or Mahone could be engaged with anybody there. Hope I helped. John
