Re: 39th Regiment, Virginia Militia

Hello Mr. Hughes,

The following is from A Guide to Virginia Military Organizations, 1861-1865 by the late Lee Wallace, Jr.

39th Regt. (City of Petersburg)

Regimental musters were held on Poplar Lawn. Late in 1860, three of the volunteer companies attached to the regiment were organized into a battalion, which, under Major David A. Weisiger, was denominated as the 4th Bn. Va. Vols. The battalion companies were the Petersburg City Guards, Petersburg Riflemen, and the Petersburg Artillery. Later, they were joined by the newly-organized Lafayette Guard. The Petersburg Greys, Cos. A and B, declined to join the battalion. After they were called into active service, the two companies of the Greys and those of the 4th Bn., less the Artillery, were organized into the 12th Regt. Va. Vols. An election of officers to fill vacancies in the eight line companies of the 39th Regt. Was ordered for January 19, 1861. Company B, under Capt. John Butte, was on duty from March 13 to April 13, 1862 with the Provost Marshal at Petersburg.

What is the name of this veteran buried at Belton?
